Inspiration

Inspiration comes more quickly when we need it to help others than when we are concerned about ourselves.

…carry a prayer in your heart always. Let sleep come every night with your mind centered in prayer.

I came across this talk by Pres. Packer by doing a search on lds.org for "Have ye inquired of the Lord" after beginning to study 1 Nephi 15 which is the chapter I am currently studying in the Book of Mormon.

I’m going to the temple this morning.  Got up early with the intent to study and pray and Amber helped me to decide to go to the Temple.  I’m very grateful for her good influence on me.  I love her with all of my heart.

Follow-up:  I decided to go to the 6am session instead of 5:30am so I could finish my studying.  Then when I started heading out I realized I could not find my wallet.  I offered a prayer and then found my wallet.  I felt the distinct thought come to my mind that it was a small answer to prayer and I was being tested with it to see if I would acknowledge the Lord’s hand in all things.  It’s easy to dismiss small helps you receive from the Lord as having been a coincidence.  I have resolved to make improved effort at recognizing the Lord’s blessings and remembering to thank Him.  Didn’t make the session (1 minute late) so I did sealings instead.  When changing back into my regular clothes I heard someone next to me sharing a story of his stake president (I believe) when he was in the presidency with him.  They would come to the temple together regularly (as a presidency) and after going through one session he would always say, "We have to do a second session…the second one is free!"  He would say that you pay for the first one because you have to get yourself up and get there, but then for the second one you’re already there and so it’s free.  I thought that was funny and a good thought.

Gospel Study Notes

Self-Reliance:

Doctrine and Covenants 29:34–35 [D&C 29:34–35] tells us there is no such thing as a temporal commandment, that all commandments are spiritual. It also tells us that man is to be “an agent unto himself.” Man cannot be an agent unto himself if he is not self-reliant. Herein we see that independence and self-reliance are critical keys to our spiritual growth. Whenever we get into a situation which threatens our self-reliance, we will find our freedom threatened as well. If we increase our dependence, we will find an immediate decrease in our freedom to act. – ” – Pres. Marion G. Romney

The celestial Nature of self-reliance

Service is not something we endure on this earth so we can earn the right to live in the celestial kingdom. Service is the very fiber of which an exalted life in the celestial kingdom is made.

Oh, for the glorious day when these things all come naturally because of the purity of our hearts. In that day there will be no need for a commandment, because we will have experienced for ourselves that we are truly happy only when we are engaged in unselfish service. – Pres. Marion G. Romney -

a person could not give a crust to the Lord without receiving a loaf of bread in return. And that has been my experience.

Don’t give just for the benefit of the poor, but give for your own welfare.

Give enough so that you can give yourself into the kingdom of God through consecrating of your means and your time. Pay an honest tithing and a generous fast offering if you want the blessings of heaven. I promise every one of you who will do it that you will increase your own prosperity, both spiritually and temporally. The Lord will reward you according to your deeds.

President Romney has said, “We will see the day when we will live on what we produce.” (Conference Reports, April 1975, p. 165.)
